During Raksha Bandhan, brothers would be scampering the streets in search of the perfect gift for their sisters while the latter scour the markets for rakhis to bestow to their protectors. While Raksha Bandhan is regarded as the day to commemorate the sacred bond between siblings, the festival goes beyond that by encompassing the warmth shared by family members and close ones.
Did you know?
Historically, Rabindranath Tagore was the first one to popularize the festival by promoting a sense of unity and commitment to all members of society and to emphasize on safeguarding each other. These sentiments still hold true in today’s society.
Apart from love, siblings have been known to share one other key aspect: competition. Growing up with a sibling would entail a childhood full of arguments. Everything ranging from performance in studies to affection from parents would be worth competing for. Real world examples of sibling rivalries are up on display in the world of sport.
The Williams sisters and Murray brothers in tennis, the Toure brothers in football and the Manning brothers in the NFL have all made impressive strides in their respective fields. Even solo sports like poker have seen their fair share of sibling competitors.
You probably haven’t heard of
The most notable sibling pair in the world of poker: Howard Lederer and Annie Duke, whose careers span a whopping 15 years. As is the case with many, Howard taught Annie to play the card game after the latter discontinued her education and moved to another state with her husband. After achieving success in local tournaments, Howard persuaded his sister to participate in the 1994 edition of the World Series of Poker where she cashed in three events and made an admirable final table finish. The brother-sister duo have a total of three WSOP bracelets between themselves. In the WSOP Tournament of Champions, Annie eliminated her brother after her full house on the flop bettered Howard’s one-pair. This sent her through a blend of emotions; anguish for knocking out her brother and joy for eventually going on to win the event.
