It struck as lightning catching everybody off guard as a solo gunman forced his way into the Resorts World Manila(RWM)Casino, a hotel and casino complex near Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila, Philippines around midnight local time on June 2.
It was an hour of complete mayhem that saw panic gripping players and guests at the casino.
However, a few hours later, police confirmed that the assailant had committed suicide in one of the hotel rooms by setting himself ablaze.
Thirty-six people have were reportedly killed in the casino with another 54-people sustaining injured owing to the attack, and are presently receiving treatment for physical wounds.
“The lone gunman committed suicide by setting himself on fire in one of the rooms on the fifth floor of the Resort World Hotel,” police sources stated.
CNN reports, the gunman fired shots from an automatic weapon and set fire to card game tables. Southern Police District Director Superintendent Tomas Apolinario stated, “The victims, who did not appear to have been shot, are thought to have died of suffocation. Most of the victims were women who were found dead inside the bathroom,"
The resort was swiftly put on lockdown. Heavily armed SWAT officers arrived in armour and bulletproof vest on the scene.
