For those followers of poker who are unaware, the Telangana government issued a gaming ordinance that banned games of skill in the state. The Supreme Court stated that it will continue to hear the writ petition filed by Games Pvt. Ltd. and Krida Sports on whether it is legal to play rummy for stakes.
Krida Sports had filed a petition in the SC back in May 2017 and amended the plea last month to challenge the constitutional validity of the two Telangana gaming ordinances that prohibited games of skill played for stakes.
A division bench consisting of Justices Deepak Gupta and Madan Lokur gave two weeks to the parties to finish their pleadings. The bench also added that the petition will not affect the cases filed by online rummy firms in the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana HC.
The order cleared by the court also adds that there will be no stay in the proceedings pending in the High Court. The date scheduled for the next hearing according to the Supreme Court website is September 18.
